Jason Galek focuses his practice primarily on accounting and tax malpractice defense, fiduciary duty, taxation, and real estate. His L.L.M. in taxation and prior experience in trusts and estates practice have well equipped him to understand the many potential pitfalls that face accounting and tax professionals. As a result, Mr. Galek’s clientele includes CPAs, accountants, enrolled agents, accounting firms, and other small and medium-sized businesses.
Mr. Galek researched and drafted a Ninth Circuit petition and reply for the Board of Immigration Appeals’ review on behalf of Russian refugees denied religious asylum in the United States. The court granted the petition for review, which resulted in a published opinion, Krotova v. Gonzales (9th Cir. 2005) 416 F.3d 1080. The Krotova opinion is frequently cited as an authority for the proposition that even when a single incident does not rise to the level of persecution, as required to support an application for asylum, the cumulative effect of several incidents may constitute persecution.
Prior to attending law school, Mr. Galek served as senior litigation paralegal at an Oakland, California non-profit civil rights law firm, where his focus included complex, high-impact matters and class action litigation before state and federal courts.
Mr. Galek is a member of the California State Bar and a volunteer with the Bar Association of San Francisco’s Volunteer Legal Services Program. Previously, he was a volunteer attorney with the Contra Costa County Bar Association Guardianship Clinic and the Law Center of Contra Costa County.
